Description of Services Offered
First Environment can provide services under Special Item Numbers (SIN) 899.1, 899.2, 899.3 and 899.8.
SIN899-1 Environmental Planning Services and Documentation
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
First Environment has participated in several life cycle assessments, including helping the U.S. EPA evaluate tools and methodologies to support its environmentally preferable purchasing program. Another LCA we performed served to demonstrate the effectiveness of an emerging power plant technology, while several others were prepared for trade organizations.
First Environment can provide LCA services to numerous areas of the government. For example, the Farm Bill contains provisions regarding purchasing of environmentally preferable bio-based products, for which LCA should be used to effectively assess their true environmental benefits and burdens. Similarly, LCA is an indispensable tool to help evaluate energy efficient technologies and look at the environmental trade-offs of alternative fuels. We can assist in other programs such as Design for Environment, Pollution Prevention, Environmental Accounting, and Green Buildings, whose “big picture” relies on life cycle thinking along the supply chain.
Our experienced LCA team follows the LCA standards set out by the International Standardization Organization, and uses powerful software tools containing comprehensive databases of products and processes, which streamline projects while providing valuable and comprehensive environmental data.
Climate Change (Greenhouse Gas Program Management)
First Environment offers a variety of climate change services to help our clients meet the unique demands, and capitalize on the many benefits, of this emerging issue. At the strategic level, we assist clients with the development of a carbon strategy, including the assessment of carbon liabilities and risks within current operations and investments. At the entity level, First Environment develops Greenhouse Gas (GHG) management systems for the collection of data and the creation of programs. We also conduct greenhouse gas inventories, and provide third-party verification of existing emission inventory systems and reports. At the operations level, we assist clients with emission reduction planning and design activities, and provide third-party validation of existing design documents.
SIN899-2 Environmental Compliance Services
Environmental Management Systems
First Environment’s knowledge and understanding of developing, implementing, and operating an EMS is unmatched in the industry. For example, we were the first environmental consulting and engineering company in the United States to obtain ISO 14001 certification (1997), and we are currently the only one that is certified corporate-wide. Further, we have operated our EMS for over five years and have gone through numerous cycles of internal and external evaluations and system advances. The firm has worked on the development of over 40 EMSs within the country and internationally, and comprises one of the largest single groups of senior level professionals working together on projects of this type.
Sustainability
First Environment can assess an organization’s existing systems, programs and policies, as well as strategies and key challenges with regard to sustainability. First Environment works to design and implement environmental management systems that meet ISO 14001 requirements and integrate strategic business objectives with sustainability principles. We also work with organizations to evolve and leverage their existing environmental and quality management systems to include social and financial elements of performance. First Environment assists clients with the analysis, outreach and ongoing communication required to identify emerging issues and engage in dialogue with important stakeholder groups. We also assist in developing metrics that are relevant to the organizations activities, drive continual improvement, encourage desired behavior, and provide for sustainable growth of the organization. Finally, our experience in report development and design can help educate interested stakeholders on the organization’s sustainable vision, goals and achievements.
SIN899-3 Environmental Occupational Training Services
First Environment excels at developing and delivering training courses about cutting-edge environmental topics. Our senior experts become involved with standard-setting and industry organizations during the development of new programs in order to understand them from the “ground up.” We then put these lessons into practice by assisting our clients, as well as our own firm, to develop robust systems to implement environmentally – and financially – beneficial solutions.
ISO 14001 Implementation & Auditing Workshop
First Environment has developed a 3-day training course on implementing an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS). Over the past 5 years it has been conducted in-house at several organizations as well as through the national training course provider, Government Institutes. The course explains the requirements of ISO 14001 in detail, discusses design and implementation issues including potential pitfalls, EMS auditing techniques, and recent developments. The participants learn practical approaches to design and implement an EMS through a series of interactive workshops.
Greening of the Government
First Environment has developed a 2½-day training course on Executive Order EO 13148, Greening the Government Through Leadership in Environmental Management. It has been conducted in multiple venues over the past 3 years and over 60 government employees and contractors have been trained. The course covers a detailed review of the requirements and timing for compliance with the EO. It also presents a range of environmental management systems, EMS and compliance auditing, and requirements for training, pollution prevention, right-to-know, procurement and acquisition, and contractor management. The lecture format is supplemented with interactive workshops that greatly help the trainees to internalize the concepts taught.
Pollution Prevention / Risk Assessments
Train-the-trainer, as well as team training programs, (1- and 2-day) are available for both the Environmental Compliance Risk Assessment Protocol (ECORAP®) and Process Specific Pollution Prevention Opportunity Assessments (PSP2OA). Programs can be conducted in the field, using real processes and equipment, as well as in the classroom. ECORAP® training includes, developing a compliance site inventory, and use and customization of protocol parameters and definitions. Many of the tools provided are quality based, including root cause analysis, brain writing, and Pareto analysis, which have many applications beyond P2/Risk assessments. Electronic forms and manuals have been developed and can be used both in training and in implementation.
Climate Change
First Environment offers a 2-day training course entitled: Reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions: Managing Your Opportunities & Risks While Building a Climate-Change Strategy. This course teaches participants: how and why many organizations are acting now to manage their GHG emissions; the latest status and impact of emerging regulatory programs in the U.S. and overseas; best practices in GHG reporting, inventory development, and target setting; proven tools for managing carbon risks; and how to launch or improve appropriate programs for your unique facilities and emissions. In addition, First Environment can develop custom train-the-trainer and team training programs covering all aspects of climate change strategy and GHG inventory and management.
Sustainability
First Environment has developed a set of training courses designed for organizations at various stages in their sustainability journey. Our courses include the following main topics:
Understanding the concept of sustainability; why many organizations are acting now to manage social, environmental and financial elements of performance; how to evolve existing environmental management systems into sustainability management systems; why and how to engage in stakeholder dialogue and outreach; identification of sustainability metrics; and best practices in sustainability reporting. These courses vary from 1 to 2 ½ days in length.
