Environmental Management Systems Case Studies:
Integrated QEH&S Management System Standard for the Scrap Recycling Industry
CLIENT: Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI)
TASK: Development of integrated quality, environmental, health & safety management system standard and implementation guide for the scrap recycling industry
OBJECTIVES:
First Environment has completed the development of an integrated quality, environmental, health & safety management system standard for the scrap recycling industry. The new standard, called RIOS or Recycling Industry Operating Standard, was authored on behalf of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) and is intended to provide the scrap recycling industry with a framework within which they can manage and improve the quality, environmental, health and safety performance of their businesses.

First Environment developed specific management system tools, procedure templates, and the RIOS Implementation Guide. The guide is a user-friendly manual that provides hints, tips and steps to follow to create a system that conforms to RIOS. In the development of tools, First Environment relied on years of management system design and implementation experience. RIOS and the implementation guide are currently being piloted by three volunteer organizations that are members of ISRI and among the RIOS Charter Members.
In addition to the system management tools, specific management content (tools, procedures) was developed to address requirements for Bloodborne Pathogens, Fire Prevention Emergency Action, Hearing Conservation, Control of Hazardous Energy, Personal Protective Equipment, Respiratory Protection, and Confined Space programs.
First Environment has also provided 3 day implementation training to representatives from RIOS member companies and on-going support to ISRI and the 3 pilot facilities.
Result:
RIOS standard formally adopted by ISRI. American National Standards Institute National Accreditation Board (ANAB) to oversee third party registrars.
