Canadian Offset System:

Project Document Development Assistance

The Canadian Offset System for Greenhouse Gases offers companies, facilities, and other developers the opportunity to obtain tradable credits for activities which reduce GHG emissions. To obtain these credits, project proponents must submit project documents to register the project as well as periodic reports to demonstrate emission reductions from the registered activities.

Though many organizations either already have activities underway or plans ready for projects that are likely to meet the offset system requirements, the development of the necessary documents to effectively demonstrate these activities’ validity may either delay or prevent obtaining credits from the Canadian Offset System.

First Environment is pleased to offer project document development assistance to facilitate an organization’s efficient project registration and subsequent request for Canadian Offset credits.

Project Documents for Registration

The project document required by the Offset System for registration is based on ISO 14064, Part 2, Specification with guidance at the project level for quantification, monitoring and reporting of greenhouse gas emission reductions or removal enhancements.  This international standard provides the structure for describing the project, explaining how program requirements are met, and establishing procedures for monitoring, quantifying and reporting project GHG reductions and removals. Our firm has been extensively involved in the development of the ISO 14064 series of climate change standards, including Part 2, and is competent in the application of this standard toward Offset System Project Documents.

In addition to our knowledge of ISO 14064, First Environment’s staff includes professionals with specific expertise related to elements of the Offset System Project Document.

Our policy analysts are familiar with the eligibility requirements and with the application of pre-approved Offset System Quantification Protocols. For project-specific quantification methodologies, First Environment’s life cycle experts can assist with the identification of GHG sources, sinks, and reservoirs and our engineers can perform emissions reduction or removal calculations associated with the baseline and project scenarios. First Environment’s management system experts can design an effective monitoring program. Finally, our verification experts can preview the project documents to confirm likely conformance to program criteria and requirements.

In general, First Environment can help you prepare a Project Document that is validated and registered with few problems and delays, meaning your project will be earning credits sooner.

GHG Reduction/Removal Reports

As an organization familiar with verification, First Environment understands the process, the expectations of the verifier, and the documentation and evidence necessary for a successful third party review. Our professionals can assist not only with the development of the GHG reduction report but the collection, preparation, and management of the supporting evidence, including documents, records, and data, to prove the assertion is materially accurate and deserving of the credits it requests. We can also assist with the selection of an independent verifier and facilitate the actual verification process, saving time and effort between seeking credits and receiving them.
